BLUEBERRIES FOR BREAKFAST

FM headphones on
and the joys of WWOZ
seem just for me
awaiting my first coffee

dreams of better times
but the technology taunts my empathy
all the atrocities I can see
and no one really punished for their crimes

like the spectators at the Roman games
we cheer the crimes we supposedly abhor
when we say oh my, while silently
screaming for more

the way of solving the cutting down of a tree
is not with an axe as far as I can see
and rockets in our pockets
will solve nothing I fear

WMD where have we heard that one before
the pieces have still not come down from shock and awe
while the Saudi autocratic Wahhabi
finance their version of the thirty years war

allied with the military industrial complex
in their quest for endless war
the president asks the badly corrupted Congress
for permission to do more

it’s two hours already gone
from New Orleans but not so fast
the band plays on and the wars move right along
while I dream of better times and have blueberries for breakfast
