Mark I. Kirkmeyer
WHO AM I?

Awarded: November 30, 2005I am the son…
… of a father, who doesn’t love himself
… of a mother, who discovered love late
I am the grandson…
… of a grandfather, who founded churches
… of a grandmother, who spoke in tongues
I am the descendant…
… of kings, prophets, templars, and saints
… of slaves, heretics, brigands, and sinners
I am the child…
… trying to impress his father
… seeking solitude at the top of a tree
I am the vanguard…
… protecting a nation
… calling for reform
I am the angel…
… of death, sweeping into wreak havoc
… of life, pulling a boy out of a wrecked car
I am the student…
… fidgeting in the corner to much energy
… leading the class, explaining what the teacher can’t.
I am he who…
… walks in the darkness
… seeks the light
I am the one…
… who asks, “Why?”
… given the answer I seek
Who am I?
… too much to label
… too little to be recognized.
Who am I?
Just me.
For if you ask, I can’t explain.
