THOSE ON THE DMZ

As I cross the river Styx
sorrow to my face fix
“Stands Alone” heard from a friend
heralds my vigil’s end.
A year of duty on the DMZ
protecting others to be free
Shutter as muscles relax
as Injim Gok I pass
Years later a smile to my face fix
I’ll never forget the men of the 1/506.

Author’s Note: I started writing this poem as I was leaving Korea in 1987; I finished it today because I got an email from one of my squad mates.
