Where have you gone oh soldier boy,
I saw you wasted in the field,
I saw a bomb your life destroy,
Though you lay hidden and concealed.
No blood no bone no trace of you,
I think you dodged the shrapnel blast,
For God reached down and rescued you,
Like a lightning bolt so quick and fast.
You were the lucky one my friend,
For you did not live to know the pain,
That only veterans comprehend,
Who live to know the inner shame.
You are fine in God’s good care,
And we are left with our despair.
