WHEN HE UNDERSTANDS HIS DAD

We want things until we get them,
Then we soon become bored,
For that which is easily taken,
Puts no edge upon the sword.
Make haste to satisfy excitement,
Make haste indeed in vain,
For it is short lived such fervour,
For long after grows the pain.
Gunfire enthrals the soldier,
But time will leave him sad,
For, as he grows much older,
He’ll know what a terrible time he had
When elation turns to anguish,
When he understands his dad.
