WHAT THOU ART

If things go well, then God I praise thee,
When they go bad I praise thee more,
For though I know dear God you made me,
I know you also created war.
For all that is, is of your making,
Tis to your design the world complies,
It is not my choice to stand forsaking,
On a field of battle that I despise.
But God though I do pray for mercy,
It does not come you help him not,
Who died for this great controversy,
Who stood his ground and thus was shot.
Yet still I praise thee, though conversely,
For what thou art thou art not.
