Wars are fought to prove opinion right,
but opinions lack facts; tis a fruitless fight,
so we judge by standards that truth refined,
is by those good standards so defined.
Tis not important that we discover truth,
Tis what we learn from its pursuit,
as would justice demand a changing law,
as wisdom would much more love implore.
Justice and love sweet nature lacks,
yet nature reveals to us cruel facts
wherefrom we reap our common law,
that still condemns not hideous war
that is, mass murder, under a different name,
lest we are honest, and admit our shame.
