There is no ultimate sacrifice but there is getting killed in war,
Doing what you’re told to do not always knowing quite what for.
Soldiers may be sacrificed but they don’t do it themselves,
Because that is simply suicide in which a soldier seldom delves.
Oh yes, it sounds so glamorous but it simply isn’t true,
Though there were some true heroes who died to save the few.
Most soldiers who experienced combat just tried to stay alive,
The opposite to sacrifice they just wanted to survive.
Oh so grand are our soldiers: oh how glorious they do fight,
How troubled are our veterans who never sleep at night.
How straight the lines of crosses how magnificent the marble wall,
How great the dreadful losses we can’t count them all.
Thousands of young people sacrificed without choice,
Doing what they were told for they were given no voice.
