THOSE WHO WAIT

Will you understand when this ex-soldier cries,
Turns away to hide his deep felt shame?
The reason why your love he oft defies
With crippling anger that never means to blame
Can you oblige by sharing this distress
When all it does is bring you pain and grief?
Live for the moments when he does impress
With his real self, so brilliant but so brief.
Can you become the hero of the peace,
The strength that keeps our land forever free,
To care for those who have so short a lease,
Who gave their all that you will always be?
By all the standards that beautify the Earth
What gives left-over soldiers all their worth?
