THE VERMILLION EMBLEM

You may well an emblem force upon good souls,
But it is that within their hearts that truth unfolds
For no willing soldier ever rushed the fray,
With a flying flag to brush the shells away.
There are places like Gallipoli now media tools,
Where men were ordered to their deaths by fools,
Where the only flag that flew was dirty white,
While collecting bodies from the battle site.
The badge of courage was etched upon their souls,
Emblems that will never fly on poles,
For the indignity of the slaughter that took their lives,
Now in the souls of others a boldness drives,
Them to the battle with a love that warriors share,
Who know the truth because they were and will be there.
