THE SCHEME OF THINGS

How many souls die with the spirit of one dead
who childless on the battlefield has not wed?
A generation? And perhaps a thousand gains
of brilliant minds of which naught remains.
To preserve the future for our children is a lie
for the children lost before they are born to die,
is no justification for the claims that war
doth future generations needs restore.
How contradictory we are of ourselves, full
of denials that our purpose is not to cull
the human flocks lest we overstock the Earth
without nature’s restriction of the human birth.
I think perhaps there is a mysterious power still
which guilds our fate and thus our ignorant will.
