THE ROLE OF SOLDIERS

Soldiers do as they are told; go where they are sent,
Until they are old; are veterans and spent.
They train to fight wars both attack and defence,
For the elected politicians at the public’s expense.
Wherever there’s a threat to security and life,
The soldier is deployed to put down the strife.
This may require him to invade other countries and land,
Often in situations that the folk don’t understand,
For the long term implications can’t always be revealed,
Thus we have to trust governments when things are concealed.
But no matter what, the soldiers roll is to fight,
He determines not wrong and determines not right.
He carries out orders and does as he is told,
And dies for the people who criticise and scold.
