THE GUNS AND THE RUMBLING OF TANKS

The less we remember the more we forget,
And forgetting alleviates pain
Be it an anxious trauma or a sad regret,
Remembering offers no gain.
Yet we cling to the memories forever more,
Unwilling to let them go,
Reliving the moments of tragedy and war
That our moments of anxiety grow.
We flutter our flags and strike up the band,
March down the streets in ranks,
Responding with pride to the applauding hands,
Of the people lined up on our flanks…
And when we go home the nightmares return…
And the guns and the rumbling of tanks.
