SOLDIERS

I offer thee my foe, my friendly hand
For I have no hate nor do I wish to fight
‘Tis those who rule us who desire the land
That they attain an ever-growing might
We meet in battle and yet we do not hate;
We kill and maim lest we receive the same.
For us there is no purpose to relate
And a soldier, of a soldier, speaks no blame.
We fear no reprisal from the gracious Lord
For Jesus spoke indeed to spare us pain.
For we are duty bound to raise the sword
Who go to war in our country’s name.
God, please forgive us for we are but the sheep
Who live and die for those who do not weep
