My dear lost friend with whom I served in war,
How truly thrilled I am to know you live,
And reflecting on the evil that we saw,
How much obliged I am that you did give,
Abundance of yourself without redress,
As duty bound we were to serve our task,
Divided not by consequence and stress,
Though of your better thought I did not ask.
I served with many but you are one alone,
Who shared a friendship that I perceived as true,
And that has lived like marrow in my bone,
For from a precious seed your friendship grew.
Bless you mate and thank you for your time,
Love to your wife, from me and from mine.
