SACRIFICIAL MAN: THE CONSCRIPT IN VIETNAM

They lost their lives, as we might well have done,
Forced to the battle by a powerful few,
How many given choice would have gone?
For soldiers do as they are told to do.
Most did not know the reason for their part,
Until returning when the deed was done.
Was God and Country really in their hearts?
That their defeats were praised as battles won.
It matters not that soldiers bleed and die,
They are but numbers in the larger plan,
It matters not that those who love them cry,
For a soldier is a sacrificial man…
And in their honour national flags do fly
For a soldier is a sacrificial man.
