Our heroes are soldiers but only when dead,
while of those who are living, Tis quite often said,
wallow in the hype the nostalgia and booze,
with everything to gain and nothing to lose.
Many saw no action; most never saw a man die
but live now on handouts in exchange for a lie.
They served because they had to; that was the way,
and they all did their duty but not all in the fray.
And while it is true that it’s the minority who fight,
and the minority who die for what they think right,
they all need the backup a rifle and round,
foodstuff and water and a bit of safe ground:
For a soldier is a soldier who is given no choice,
who responds to the orders from a threatening voice.
