Nature determines the perpetually operating factors of war,
As much as it determines the balanced ingredients of life,
Providing the beast predator with sharp talon and claw,
And the warrior soldier with the gun and the knife.
Humanity obliges with creeds of conflict, like Islam,
And the divisional processes of Christianity too,
The political distortions of the tribe and the clan,
In that the masses are corrupted by the resilient few.
Rain is as rain is and water is life,
The hippopotamus stumbles where the antelope fly,
Blood is as blood is and stains the clean knife,
And the old man grumbles because he understands why.
War is like water needful of rain,
Providing us with comfort from the experience of pain.
