MARIA
(For Maria Sutherland)

As a soldier prays with silent lips
And his stare seems not to care
And from his heart his essence slips
Then I see you standing there.
You take his hand from far away
And smile into his eye
That he sees yet the light of day
And no longer wants to die.
So strong your words so truly said,
So gentle and so fine,
That causes man to turn and shed
Distress, to better dine
Upon the promise you inspire
Inside his healing brain,
That gives him hope and inner fire
Because you eased his pain.
