Becoming a soldier was a dream,
Becoming reality it would seem.
I was a soldier of my own choice
And a man with my own voice…
Prepared to fight as such in war;
Die for the men of my own corps.
But I am not a soldier still;
I am no longer trained to kill,
And time saw in me increase,
a greater will to keep the peace
That now I enjoy my life
And share love with my dear wife.
For my war it has long gone;
‘Tis dead; ‘tis past; ‘tis done!
