On the fantail the first bomb exploded;
Then an incendiary on the galley deck house,
The third one remained unexploded,
And lay there as quiet as a little mouse.
The fourth hit the forward ammunition magazines,
Then another incendiary in the aft engine room.
These were violent and horrific scene’s
That sent the USS Peary to her doom.
But the machine guns kept on firing,
Until the last Japanese plane flew away,
None from their posts retiring,
As they courageously tried to hold them at bay.
Stern first the ship sank to the bottom,
Where like a great shattered shadow she lay.
