EMPTY RIFLE

The empty rifle never a life will save,
But makes a cross for a soldier’s grave,
And while you sleep thinking of your son,
Pray that he beside him has a loaded gun.
For each on each in foul war depend,
One for the other a friend upon a friend.
One at your back another at your flank,
A unit formed as solid as a tank.
For it takes but one in a combat team,
To shatter life; shatter hope and dream.
For who wages war with an empty gun
Will, on the day, turn away and run,
For when the head is not there with the heart,
Then doth the hollow boulder soon depart.
