Old soldiers hearing yet battle’s Babel screams
Float on ‘Old Man River’ dreams
Drink the nectarous broth prepared
By Gods of War concocted
Once hopeful values disrupted
Memories long hidden
Of prehistoric struggle come nightly unbidden
From way down in old soldier’s backpack forbidden.

War veterans chambered by thoughtful soliloquy
Now stand against indifferent winds of destiny
Sweet-and-sour visions tempestuous
Tortuous life fractious
In lost childhood racing
Sacrifices of the brotherhood haunting
Dreams fantastic illusions tumbled down
Torn from youthful heads life’s princely crown.
