Charles J. Ingerson

The high price
of democracy is
one where people die
and others don’t learn
or improve the plight
of those around them.

There’s no excuse
for not caring
for the old
the homeless
the widow
or the orphan.

So those who stand
by with their freedoms
and don’t do anything
are worse than those
who inflict evilly
the harm on others.

The high price
is one that
will be paid
either now
or on another day
for freedom
always collects
from all.
