As memories fade within
shimmering light filters all
seeing silhouettes on shades
from long ago coming home
coming back so far alone
to frequent found in raids
hearing a nations call
now a life divided thin;

Waving flags and parades
bugles call me in the night
waking sweating screaming
wondering who I am again
as a child of God to begin
when I’ve just been dreaming
trying to make a world right
silhouettes playing charades;

Once in ‘while to just awake
hearing others to proclaim
‘baby killers’ inflicting pain
yet Memorial Day to find
of friends able to remind
in swallow graves lain
only war escapes the blame
never our valor to shake!
