No longer just long guns
now rifled extreme all
yet still heard the drums
when into battle to call;

The oft-repeated beating
fines one’s heart racing
a grand vision completing
throughout history tracing;

Many left bloodied dead
others wounded crippled
some unaccountable led
yet our survivors stifled;

Glorification in the movies
heroes made of thespians
hippies and the groupies
while many just Orwellians;

The veteran cares for all
seeking quiet and peace
glorification not their call
such emotions to release;

Centuries yet millenniums
a veteran comes and goes
each day spent in requiems
a sure sacrifice each knows;

Having felt shot and shell
scared and yet prepared
viewed often the jaws of hell
when warfare thus declared;

Coming into the day’s dawn
reflections on the placid lake
seeing the doe and fawn
serenity is theirs to awake!
