HEARING ECHOES

Far away wars keep returning
in my mind/heart so burning
wanting to forget but learning
clarity of thought discerning;

Plop, Plop, Plop in the night
the plane too low to drop
sixteen in a string no sight
no chutes deployed so plop:

Parachutes littering the scene
some on steeples bloodstained
others on buildings so seen
expressions dreams pained:

Hearing echoes of what again
D-Day or another war zone
where nightmares thus begin
so far away and so very alone!
