DEAD EARS

(Prelude:

Going forth to learn
what wonders of life
in history’s concern
amid today’s strife.

Yet found is sadness
little is said of joy
this must be madness
and just an adult ploy.

Thus to be tuned out
by words to beguile
as music does shout
in innocence’s smile.

Then lost is hearing
when evil comes to stay
danger ever nearing
while slumbering today.)

Dead Ears

Hear the drums
the cannonade
screams of death
as they slumbered
those found dead
unable to awaken
unable to hear.

Each day to plow
planting seeds
watering fields
as they slumbered
those found dead
unable to awaken
unable to hear.

Playing games
repeating rhetoric
making love
as they slumbered
those found dead
unable to awaken
unable to hear.

Incredibly selfish
filling only their needs
past normal feelings
as they slumbered
those found dead
unable to awaken
unable to hear.

Then came armies
marching strong, fast
killing all in their path
as they slumbered
those found dead
unable to awaken
unable to hear.

So their homes entered
soldiers them to kill
even in their sleep
as they slumbered
those found dead
unable to awaken
unable to hear.

From hamlet to village
village to town to city
city to state to nation
as they slumbered
those found dead
unable to awaken
unable to hear.

It was with dead ears
they asked life’s questions
beyond feelings of truth
as yet they slumbered
those found dead
unable to awaken
unable to hear.

(Epilogue:

In the flair of youth
wanting not hear
what might be truth
and unhappiness fear.

There is a way
to avoid the past
ignoring even today
in ignorance to last.

So with rhetoric born
from another’s lies
becoming a creed worn
till all feeling dies.

Then when comes truth
fair carried and pure
dead ears have the youth
minds made up for sure.

No logic or attempt to find
that there might be another
with wisdom to remind
not even a sister/brother.

How sad to waste effort
where heads are in sand
only death to comfort
in justice’s demand.)
