DISTANT ECHOES
A Literary Journal
About Us:
Distant Echoes is a quarterly print journal in small magazine format. Our target audience is veterans of all wars and the family and friends of veterans. We are also international, with copies going to such diverse places as Thailand, England, Switzerland, Ireland, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
One question has surfaced frequently, that is, as to whether a submitter has to be a veteran, a family member, or a friend only. The answer to that is no, anyone can submit to Distant Echoes as long as the parameters set in the guidelines are met. Please read the guidelines completely before submitting. While we tend to be very writer friendly, we do adhere to our guidelines. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at the email or postal address given in the guidelines.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
L. M. Kolenich, Managing Editor
E. W. Richardson, Editor (Formerly, USMC, Viet Nam, 1969-70)
DISTANT ECHOES GUIDELINES
We are looking for poems, essays, letters, and short stories that are honest and from the heart. Work may be serious, humorous and everything in between. You don't have to be Hemingway or Emily Dickinson. We just want you to write from your heart.
Our Parameters:
Submitted work may pertain to military service and/or life; however, we will not pass up a good piece of writing if it does not. If you are uncertain if your work fits, send it anyway. If we like it, we'll print it.
Submitted work should be set flush to the left. Due to space limitations, stanza breaks are sometimes eliminated. If your work requires special formatting, please let us know.
Poems should be 40 lines maximum. Stories, essays, etc., should be between 700-1000 words, however, once again, we will not pass up a stellar piece if it doesn't fit these parameters. As stated earlier, if you aren't sure, send it anyway.
Of Particular Note:
These three rules are set in stone:
- We will not accept any work that defames or disrespects those men and women who served.
- We will not accept any work that is bigoted toward race, religion, creed, culture, or sexual orientation.
- We will not accept any work that contains profanity for the sake of profanity.
In short...if we don't like it, we won't print it.
In Summary:
Please make sure you run a spell check before submitting. We reserve the right to make editorial changes as necessary for formatting and to maintain our standards of quality. Under no circumstances will we rewrite a piece of work. If a rewrite is necessary, we will contact the author with our suggestions.
If you submit your work via email DO NOT send your work as an attachment. All online submissions should be in the body of the email. Please send all email submissions to: trumddp143@yahoo.com
We also accept submissions via "snail mail" (via U. S. Post Office). The submission MUST BE TYPED, double spaced. All previous guidelines relative to formatting will apply. A SASE must accompany all mailed submissions for consideration. Send snail mail submissions to:

A BIT OF HISTORY
You may be interested in some history about the publication.
Distant Echoes (DE, as we call it affectionately) began back in 1999. My wife, Lynn, saw the joy I received from seeing my first works in print and asked why we could not do that for others. She was especially intrigued by the stories and works of those who had or still are in service to our country.
DE was therefore born, and is dedicated to those men and women who have or are serving. As a result, much of what we receive is of a military nature, but we do not limit materials to that genre. We will not pass up a good piece of work as stated in the guidelines.
It is totally published and controlled by my wife and me.
In form, it began as a newsletter in newspaper format. Today, it is set in small magazine format and is the size of an 8½" x 11½" folded in half and saddle stapled. We layout and print DE at home, keeping it simple and letting the work inside be the focus. Our feeling has been, and always will be, that the publication is about the work it contains... not slick covers and ads.
That being said, we do strive to give DE as professional an appearance as possible. It is our child... we will not send it out into the world looking like a ragbag.
We do use appropriate clip art as needed and will look at submitted art from the authors with interest. We are beginners on the use of art, so we don't promise its use.
So there you have it in a nutshell. Thanks for your interest. We look forward to hearing from you.
Yours in verse,
E.W. Richardson
