A SOLDIER’S WOUND

Crimson juice in an appendage of the desert,
Shrapnel in the appendage of the soul,
Brains spattered on the uniformal dress,
A warrior’s gift to freedom!
But where was my Danielle?

The tunnel taunts me,
The voices call for me,
The light invites me,
But where was my Danielle?

I never made love to her enough,
I never said it enough,
I never showed her enough,
But where was my Danielle?

Terror won’t extinguish me,
Shells won’t crash through my allegiance,
Mortars won’t drown out my flag,
But where was my Danielle?

Soaring with the bald eagles,
Letting the clouds take over,
Arriving in the isolated land of darkness!
But where was my Danielle?
