A SOLDIER’S THOUGHTS…
We are at a time in our lives that makes me wonder…
What our existence signifies.
What is to become of us as a civilization…
When the whole world cries out for peace and liberty
Only to see war and crime on humanity… ?
We as human beings try so hard to do the right thing
Only to accomplish so little of what we try to exceed.
Millions of people watch in anxious hopes…
That no more American soldiers will lose their lives
In this crazy but necessary battle for independence,
One mad man can ruin an entire country and its people
For his own selfish needs and ambitions.
It makes me wonder what kind of sinister thoughts prevail…
In the mind of this man we call Saddam.
Thousands of families are separated daily
And thousands more are affected by the deployments of our beloved troops.
From all walks of life, races and religions,
Fathers, mothers, sons and daughters
All join forces in a team effort to end this madness soon.
The hot desert sun beats down with a vengeance on dehydrated bodies….
As a constant reminder that they are in “no man’s land”
– Saudi Arabia –
When the sun sets and the cool night wind
Begins to blow the desert sand in the soundless air…
You can hear the cries of despair and homesick loneliness setting in.
Undeniable trust and loyalty to the president of the United States
Has American troops moral high…
In the hopes that this war will end soon and we can all go home.
Dear lord, I pray that you give our leaders the wisdom, strength and knowledge
To get us through this ordeal sane and safe
So we can return to our beloved families who worry each day we are gone
And also are affected strongly by this huge contribution to humanity, peace and happiness
That we serve and willingly sacrifice our lives for.
The American dream – peace, liberty and justice for all – amen

Author’s Note: This particular poem was written by me right after we got attacked by a scud that killed about a dozen soldiers in the Dhahran towers. I was 21 years old, single and frightened. I remember lying in my cot and could not sleep so I wrote this piece called “A Soldiers Thoughts...”
