Melanie C. Campos ~ MahTame

YOU WERE SO YOUNG

You were so young
And you went to war
Such a sacrifice you gave
Before you were twenty
Fighting and killing
Bet you never thought
This was to be in your life
You enlisted to fight in ‘Nam
Other kids stayed home ‘n
Went to college or worked
Wonder if their life turned
Out like yours, possibly
More likely not, they didn’t
Stand guard and shoot
You were so young
Not yet an older man
Yet you grew so fast
Had to make decisions
Like mature, wise men
Always on the look out
To cover your fellow soldiers
Decisions made without mom
Nor had your dad nearby too
You grew so fast in that ugly war ‘n
Became a man in a short year’s time
