F. William Broome

Tell me of our unpaid debt to brave warriors.
Tell me why they are, again, the chosen ones.
Tell me why after their tragic deaths we live on.
Tell me our society is a tribute to their memory.
Tell me our doing for others does them honor.
Tell me our fragments are they living on us.
Tell me our sum equals what they might have been.
Tell me our children are their surrogates.
Tell me our young reclaims the lives cut short.
Tell me how their world might now excel ours.
Tell me how mankind is bettered by it all.
And tell me how we must preserve the nation
for which they fought until life itself was taken.
