I often swim against the tide
Where others take their place in stride
On matters which to them seem plain
I’m told I run against the grain

I find myself at polar ends
With enemies, sometimes with friends
I’m careful for the things I choose
To speak about, express my views

When I oppose what they accept
I’m cynical and circumspect
If I support what they’ve refused
I’m gullible and called confused

I am not big on argument
Most times it isn’t time well spent
But when my blood begins to boil
I speak my mind, I don’t recoil

I’m not sure if I’m blessed or cursed
To sometimes be the one who’s first
To pull away the window shade
And look beyond the masquerade

Of lies and falsehoods and deceit
Dressed up like truth and scented sweet
Which shape the way we think about
Ourselves within, our lives without

I may be with the cynic kings
Or true believer in some things
The difference is a fine thin line
So I just call my feelings mine
