TRAIN IS ROCKING
(Subway Ride from Work)
Train is rocking to the beat
People in a line
People staring aimlessly
I stare at the sign
Do not play the music loud
Do not hold the doors
Chewing gum and magazines
I stare at the floors
Till a tall guy on my right
Turns and shifts his eyes
Now I’m forced to look his way
Despite my disguise
Train is rocking rattle loud
I can’t hear a thing
‘cept a man and his guitar
He begins to sing
Something that Beatles wrote
Something that I know
Throw a dollar in his cap?
Or just up and go
Train is rocking to the beat
I hear rhythm blues
On an old accordion
But I can’t confuse
Mercy beats and rag time riffs
They are not the same
Sucker for a steel guitar
Lennon wins the game
Throw a dollar in the cap
Smile at the guitar
Shrug at the accordion
Baby – he’s a star
As I look up at the doors
Do not lean against
Train’s at forty-second street
Evening has commenced
