REPLACEABLE
(For Meg)

“Everyone’s replaceable” – I said to you one day
Of course that was in summer-time, before you went away.
You nodded in agreement – “Of course – I know that’s true”
We ambled down the empty beach – I never had a clue

That as we watched the ocean waves – that summer was your last
You said to me – “When it’s my time – I hope that I go fast”
You did leave very quickly – for me it was too soon
Alone, I watch the April rain, and think about that dune

That we strolled down together, as if we had all day
I wish that you were by my side, so you could hear me say
That no one is replaceable – I’ve learned what’s really true
I see your face – I can’t erase – There’s no replacing you
