I OWE YOU NOTHING

Perhaps you’d buy me dinner
My birthday’s on the twelfth
And yours is coming up real soon
Let’s celebrate our health
And find a favorite dining spot;
A quiet place for two
But then I lost my appetite
Because I heard from you

You said – I owe you nothing –
Yes this is what you said
Four words keep running through my mind
They’re spinning in my head
You said – I owe you nothing
Not that I’m keeping score
And when I heard you utter that
It cut me to the core

I thought we had a partnership
I thought you were my friend
I didn’t think you multiplied
The dollars that we spend
I do admit I turned it up
I left the electric on
And so your house was warm as toast
While you and I were gone

And so you owe me nothing
Yes – what you say is true
So I will pay your heating bill
To make this maxim true
And then I’ll owe you nothing
And nothing’s what I’ll get
I feel the cold wind start to blow
But please don’t get upset
Because you owe me nothing
You’ve given me enough
Yes I will pay your heating bill
And you can keep the stuff
That used to warm me up at night
Yes I’ll pay for the heat
But emptiness is what I feel
I can’t help but repeat
That now you owe me nothing
Yes nothing’s what I’ve got
It’s true I left the heater on
I guess I just forgot
That people cannot live on love
So sad to find it’s true
It’s funny how a little phrase
Can make me feel so blue
So I will pay the heating bill
I guess it’s only fair
And then you can be on your way
And we can call it square
