THE WAR IS ALWAYS WITH ME
The war is always with me
It never lets me be
Sometimes it wakes me up at night
Sometimes it comes to tea
It never goes away
That's what my boyfriend said
Sometimes the voices roar so loud
That I'd be better dead
Just like my brother Vinnie
I still can see his stare
One minute he sat next to me
And then he wasn't there
The war is always with me
Sometimes it's centered front
One minute Vin was talking
And then I heard a grunt
A sentence never finished
Is what I have to hold
The War is always with me
Sometimes I feel so cold
Sometimes I feel the burning
Sometimes it's Raymond A
On any given evening
On any given Day
The War is always with me
I do my best to cope
Sometimes it gets the best of me
I do my best to hope
My friends who didn't make it
Have somehow found their peace
But me – I'm in a prison now
I pray they have release
So many brothers missing
I use the present tense
The war is always with me
Some things just don't make sense
Sometimes there is no closure
We do what must be done
The war is always with me
The war is never won
