MY PROMISE, O CANADA

A country vast and wide
Filled with love and pride
Varied cultures from east to west
My compatriots, we are the best
O Canada, I promise to keep and protect you!

The cities with historic streets
Walking through them is like a treat
The place that I call my country, I must say
I hope that with this poem, I did convey
“O Canada, I promise to keep and protect you!”

Author’s Note: I thank my French teacher, Madame Karine Bellefeuille, for helping polish the French version of the above poem. Merci beaucoup Mme Bellefuille, vous êtes très gentille!!! Vous êtes véritablement une inspiration à tous vos étudiants.

Omar Bainto receiving the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award: 2008
This year, I was able to accomplish lots of things aside from surviving grade 10. I received my Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award from the Lt Governor; I was able to continue volunteering with The St. John Ambulance, Calgary Science Centre and Canada Olympic Park. In addition to that, I was able to finish my training with the Calgary Distress Centre and attended the information session of the Mayor’s Youth Council ready to go after the summer break. I must say, I enjoyed all the knowledge and experiences that these organizations have afforded me. This summer, I am going for my Senior Leadership Scholarship at CFB Cold Lake for six weeks. Because of that, I am going to miss working at the Calgary Stampede this year. While waiting for my travel orders for camp, I am tentatively designated to be the Saint John Ambulance’s mascot at the Stampede Parade.

On the 15th of this month, I turned sixteen and thought it was time for me to move on. I have already started the process of signing up with the Canadian Forces Reserve hoping to join the Military Police Platoon after my Basic Training. If I get accepted, I’d love to stay with the air cadets if my future commanding officer would give me the permission to finish my Level 5 or even as a volunteer. My decision was inspired by the above poem written for this coming Canada Day on July 1st.

Happy Canada Day (July 1st) to all!!!
