THE ROSE

I picked up the rose and the memories flowed

I remember the happy smile in your eyes when you first looked at your baby
The hopeful smile in your eyes when I went down on one knee
The fearful smile when you were told of the cancer
The brave smile before they cut on you
The smile of relief when you awakened
The fearful smile when they told you it had spread
The smile on your lips when I told you I loved you
and the mischievous smile standing before the Xmas tree on Christmas Eve
holding my present

And now, my smile of sadness as I put the rose back down on your casket
