LIFE’S DRUM BEATS ON

March on, struggle to maintain
Keep up, don’t be left behind
Sweat, bleed and die
But the drum beats on.

Fight, hide and dream
Sleep, creep and cry
Mud, stench, and wet clothes
But the drum beats on.

Remember, forget and move in a daze
Run, walk, crawl
Scream, yell and mutter
But the drum beats on

Hunger, thirst and hurt
Sick, well or somewhere in between
Wounded, not wounded or dead
But the drum beats on

Shoot, be shot or marvel at the difference
Leech, bugs, snakes
VC, Charlie, NVA
But the drum beats on

Rest, stroll up a trail
Helped by a friend
Cool breeze, clean skin
But the drum beats on

Shake hands, hug, and even kiss
Afternoon nap, laugh and a big smile
Soft green grass, sweet smell of honeysuckle
But the drum beats on

Sweet memories, forgotten childhood sweethearts, a spring dance
Stroll, short walks, a dip in your favorite swimming hole
Read a poem, talk with a friend or give an original oration
But the drum beats on

A great meal, a cold bottle of fine wine and no pain at all
Feeling great and appreciating it
Not a care in the world, full of life
But the drum beats on

At peace with the world, finding beauty at every turn
Butterflies, singing birds and small dogs
Family, friends and love of your life
But the drum beats on.

All things are relevant and of no importance
Keep a good thought for your brother
Makes no difference if you are there or not
Life’s drum beats on.
